Ramblings of an Extreme Man

Canunda National Park

After the The Red Centre our first coastal stop in South Australia was at Canunda national park at a campsite descriptively called number 2 rocks. It was good to see surf again even though I was boardless, but it sure was wild, this is a pretty epic coastline. The full fury of the southern ocean hits shallow rock shelf all along this coastline.

I spent my birthday here doing the following:
-drinking beer
-skinny dipping
-fishing
-drinking beer
-eating copious amounts of cheese
I also drank a few beers.

All in all it was a great day, and a great place to spend a few days while we waited to go on the ferry to Tasmania.

FACTS:
How to get there:
From Carpenter Rocks drive north, the road will eventually turn to gravel and then sand. The sand track runs the length of Canunda national park.

Camping Cost:
$ 13 per night for up to 6 people in one vehicle.

Boat Access:
There’s nowhere to launch a boat near the campsite. You can launch at Carpenter Rocks, but beware this ocean can be rough.

Other Opportunities:
I’m sure the snorkeling would be great here if you were lucky enough to get a calm day.
Sliding down sand dunes, weeeee!

  2. Sounds like you had a great birthday. Canunda is awesome. We spent a week there last Jan. Stayed at Southend. The four wheel driving is great fun. Love your photos, they brought back great memories. Cheers!
